Giorgio Vasari

Giorgio Vasari

Italian painter, architect, and writer. Born in Arezzo, he died in Florence. He first learned drawing from his grandfather's cousin Luca Signorelli, and in 1524 he went to Florence to study under the painter Andrea del Sarto and the sculptor Baccio Bandinelli. During this time he had the opportunity to come into contact with Michelangelo, whom he idolized throughout his life. As a member of the Medici family, the sovereigns of Florence, he painted portraits of Alessandro and Lorenzo (both in 1534, Uffizi Gallery). In 1555, at the request of Cosimo, he painted the murals in Palazzo Vecchio, and made major changes to the interior. His most famous work as an architect is the current building of the Uffizi Gallery. Prior to that, beginning in 1946, he had traveled all over Italy, collecting a vast amount of material on artists from the 13th century onwards, and wrote the famous "Le vite de' più eccellenti pittori, scultori et architetti italiani" (Live Lives of Artists) in 1950. The version published today is based on the revised edition from 1968, but it remains an extremely valuable document for researchers of art history.
