Tomodai (English) free stock

Japanese: 共台 - ともだい（英語表記）free stock

A rootstock used when grafting between the same variety or different varieties of the same species. For example, peonies are propagated by grafting, and generally there is a peony rootstock, which is grafted onto the roots of a peony, and a main rootstock, which is grafted onto the roots of a peony. Seedlings from a peony rootstock grow vigorously in the early stages but have a short lifespan and are short in height. Main rootstocks have a long lifespan and can reach a height of about 2 to 3 meters, but their initial growth is slow.

同品種間または同種異品種間の接木 (つぎき) をするときの台木。たとえばボタンの場合には，その繁殖は接木によるが，一般にシャクヤクの根につぐシャクヤク台と，ボタンの根につぐ本台とがある。シャクヤク台の苗は初期の育成は旺盛であるが寿命は短く，丈は低い。本台は寿命が長く，丈も2～3mぐらいになるが，初期の発育が鈍い。
