A village in Uda County, northeastern Nara Prefecture. Population 6,809 (1995). Bordering Mie Prefecture to the east, the village is made up of the Uda Mountains in the southeast and the Yamato Plateau in the northwest, with a large difference in elevation. The Uda River flows northeast under the fault cliff that runs through the center of the village, and the Kasama River flows through the north. Most of the village area is covered by forests, and the main industries are agriculture and forestry and tourism centered around Muroji Temple. In agriculture, rice, tea and vegetables are cultivated. Muroji Temple is famous as "Women's Koyasan," while Oono Temple, located where the Muroji River joins the Uda River, is famous for its stone Buddha statues (history). 奈良県北東部,宇陀郡の村。人口6809(1995)。東は三重県に接し,南東部の宇陀山地と北西部の大和高原からなり,高低差が激しい。村の中央を走る断層崖下を宇陀川が北東流し,北部には笠間川が流れる。村域の大部分を山林が占め,主産業は農林業と室生寺を中心とする観光で,農業は米作のほか茶や野菜栽培が行われる。室生寺は〈女人高野〉として著名だが,室生川が宇陀川に合流するところにある大野寺は石仏(史)で有名。
