Kyogoku Mochikiyo

Japanese:
Kyogoku Mochikiyo
Year of death: Bunmei 2.8.4 (August 30, 1470)
Year of birth: 1407
A military commander in the Muromachi period. His posthumous name was Seikan. He was the third son of Takamitsu. When his father Takamitsu died in August 1413, the family headship passed to his eldest brother Mochitaka (Mochimitsu), but as he was still a child, his uncle Takakazu became his guardian. However, when Mochitaka died of illness in January 1439, Takakazu and then Mochikiyo inherited the family headship as Mochitaka had no legitimate son. This was in December 1441. Mochikiyo's military actions had already been seen in 1441, when he was part of the army that pursued Ashikaga Mochiuji, but as soon as he inherited the family headship, he began to stand out more and more as the governor of the provinces of Omi, Izumo, and Hida. In Kakitsu 1, he was appointed head of the Samurai Department, replacing Yamana Mochitoyo, and in office he served from Kakitsu 1 to Bun'an 4 (1447) and from Hōtoku 1 (1449) to Bunshō 1 (1466), during which time he appointed senior vassal Taga Takatada as shoshidai. When the Onin War began, Mochikiyo joined the Eastern Army (Hosokawa Katsumoto's side) while his direct descendant Rokkaku Takayori joined the Western Army (Yamana Mochitoyo's side), splitting the Sasaki clan in two, but Mochikiyo allied with Takayori's cousin Masataka, and worked to weaken the Western Army's power in Omi and expand the influence of the Kyogoku clan. He can be described as the greatest figure in the Kyogoku clan since Doyō. At the start of the war, the Eastern Army held the upper hand in Omi, but after Mochikiyo's death the situation changed drastically and the Kyogoku clan itself fell into extreme confusion.
