Also written as Jiraiya. A phantom thief who appears in kusazoshi (Japanese traditional writings) and kabuki. In a Chinese Ming Dynasty novel, there is a phantom thief named Garaiya who can appear and disappear at will, writing "I am coming" on the gate of the house he attacks before leaving. This protagonist was created by adapting this novel. Jiraiya uses toad magic and engages in a three-way battle of supernatural magic with Orochimaru, who uses snake magic, and Tsunade (Otsuna), who uses namekuji magic. In kabuki, Kawatake Mokuami adapted a kusazoshi by Mizukaki Egao and premiered it in 1852 at the Kawarazakiza Theater under the title "The Tale of Jiraiya the Hero."
