[Shape and Use]
In the early stages, the variety of pottery was relatively small, but after the Classical period, there were about 30 different types of Greek pottery vessels, depending on their uses. Of these, amphorae, perikes, and stamnos were mainly used for storing wine, oil, honey, and wheat; kraters, psykter, lebes, kantharos, and dinos were used for banquets; kylix and skyphos were drinking cups; small lekythos, aryballos, and alabastron were perfume bottles, but the white lekythos from the 5th century BC onwards was used only for funerals. Oenochoe with a trefoil rim were water pitchers (or wine jugs); hydria with vertical or horizontal handles were water jugs for women to draw water from a spring; long-necked lutropholos and lebes gamikos were used by brides at weddings; and pyxis, a cylindrical, lidded box for women's presentations. Other items included plates, bowls, and cups (Figure 4). …
