…Even today, bullfights follow a ritualized format, beginning with the entrance ceremony of all the bullfighters, dressed in traditional costumes from the 16th century, followed by the release of a specially bred bull. The order is as follows: (1) the harpooner (banderillero) first smacks the bull with his cape to determine its nature, (2) the matador then gives the bull the first thrust, (3) the mounted spearman (picador) stabs it with his spear, (4) three matadors take turns stabbing, (5) the banderillero then stabs it with two or four decorated banderillas (harpoons). (6) Finally, the leading matador, holding a red cloth called a muleta in his left hand, finishes off the bull with a dagger in his right hand in the aorta (matador means killer). …
