…In 1659, the East India Company ordered over 57,000 pieces of blue-and-white porcelain, which led to the rapid development of the export industry. These were intended for Mocha, Arabia, but later they were exported in large quantities to Europe as well, where overglazed porcelain was particularly admired, and overglazed Ko-Imari, a style of pottery with red and gold decorations on blue-and-white porcelain, spread throughout the country as a uniquely Japanese style of pottery. In the 18th century, European kilns, including Meissen in Germany, produced imitations of Kakiemon and Ko-Imari-style overglaze porcelain, which were also actively imitated in China and sold in Europe. …
