A kana zoshi (traditional Japanese story). Published towards the end of the Kan'ei era (1624-44). The author's name is unknown, but the book is listed as "Shimizu Asceticism" in the "Catalogue of Books" from the Jōkyō era, and is thought to have been written by a monk from Kiyomizu-dera Temple. It expresses its approval of Chozan Irin'an's "Shimizu Monogatari," lists and explains each item of the book, and also presents his own theory. As it was written by a monk, it is detailed in Buddhist doctrine, but also acknowledges Confucianism, and says that Buddhism and Confucianism are the same in terms of morality, and that three Chinese saints appeared to spread Buddhism.
