Since the mid-16th century, choral music has been used in the worship services of the Church of England (Anglican Church). Composed to English texts taken from the Bible or other religious texts, it played a role similar to the motet used in the Roman Catholic Church, but those from the 17th century onwards are more like cantatas. Those sung only by the choir are called full anthems, and those with solo parts are called verse anthems. Famous works include those by Purcell, Handel, S.S. Wesley, and R. Vaughan Williams.
