Mount Hakkai

Japanese:
Mount Hakkai

A sacred mountain in Minami-Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture. It is one of the main peaks at the front entrance of the Echigo Sanzan, with an elevation of 1,778 meters. It is designated as part of the Echigo Sanzan Tadami Quasi-National Park. The mountain is composed of andesite from the Jounai Group of the Miocene Tertiary Period, and the summit was eroded in its prime and split into eight steep peaks, hence the name. It has long been famous as a national mountain ascetic training ground for mountain priests, and even today there is a shrine office for the Hakkai climbing worship group at the Osakiguchi entrance, which is the main approach to the mountain on the western foot of the mountain, and in the summer it is a sacred mountain of faith that is climbed by group climbers from all over the country. The most common trailhead is the Osakiguchi from Itsukamachi Station on the JR Joetsu Line, but there are also the Jonaiguchi and Okuraguchi from the Mizunashi River. At the back entrance, there is the Miyama traverse route from Koide Station through Oyu Onsen to Shiori Pass, which is a famous winter skiing spot.
