Born: January 6, 1913, Poronpuka [Died] July 29, 2001. Cieszyn Polish politician. After losing his father in a mining accident, he moved to France with his mother in 1923. In 1931, he joined the French Communist Party. In 1934, he moved to Belgium, and during World War II, he led the Polish resistance against Germany. He returned to Poland in 1948, and in 1954, he graduated from the Krakow University of Mining and Metallurgy. In 1954, he became a member of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers' Party, and in 1956, a member of the party's Politburo. From 1957 to 1970, he gained popularity among the working class as the party's first secretary in Katowice Province. At the end of 1970, he became the party's first secretary after Władysław Gomułka resigned as a result of the workers' riots in Baltic cities (→ Gdańsk riots). He was reappointed to the same position in 1975. In 1980, he resigned due to illness during a confrontation with workers demanding the establishment of the independent trade union "Solidarity".
