...The first real book club was established in Germany in 1919, when books were difficult to obtain due to the war, and it is said that the Volksverband der Bücherfreunde, a national association of friends of the book, with about 100 members, reprinted and sold classical literature. In the United States, where there are vast areas without bookstores or libraries, Harry Scherman (1887-1969) established the Book-of-the-Month Club in 1926, and selected ST Warner's novel, Lolly Willows, as the first book to be read.
