This is an Imperial family from the end of the Kamakura period to the Muromachi period, and is noted for being an early hereditary Imperial family. It is named after the residence of the lord at Itsuji in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City. The first head was Prince Moriyoshi of Emperor Kameyama, who became a monk and took the name Kakujo (or Kakusei). In 1327 (Kareya 2), he handed over the Itsuji estate, which he had inherited, to Shikibukyo Wakamiya (possibly Prince Hiroakira), who is thought to be the son of Prince Hisaakira, Shogun of the Jimyoin lineage of the Kamakura Palace. During the Kenmu Restoration, there was a dispute between Moriyoshi and Sokaku, who is thought to be the son of Prince Moriyoshi, but with the fall of Prince Moriyoshi's side, who fought in various places as a general for the Southern Court, Prince Hiroakira's descendants inherited the title of Imperial Prince.
