Charadriiformes, Scolopacidae. Total length 23-27cm. In summer plumage (→ plumage), the head, back, and upper wings are brownish gray, and the face and chest are white with dense brownish gray vertical stripes. The abdomen is white, and the sides have gray-brown horizontal stripes. In winter plumage and juvenile plumage, the underside is pale gray, and the stripes become unclear. The legs are yellow, and the beak is long and black. They breed in the far northeastern part of Russia from eastern Siberia to the Kamchatka Peninsula, and in parts of the Yenisei River estuary, and spend the winter in the Philippines, the Malay Archipelago, Sulawesi, New Guinea, Australia, and other places. They arrive in Japan during the spring and autumn migration, and can be seen on coasts, tidal flats, riverbanks, and rice fields in various places. They make a whistling sound, "Pyu-i, pu-i." The American Yellowshank, T. incana , which looks very similar, occasionally comes to Japan as a migratory or winter bird (→ migratory bird). チドリ目シギ科。全長 23～27cm。夏羽（→羽衣）では頭上，背，翼上面は褐色みを帯びる灰色で，顔から胸部は白色地に褐色を帯びる灰色縦斑が密にある。腹部は白く，脇には灰褐色の横斑がある。冬羽や幼鳥羽は下面が淡い灰色で，斑が不鮮明になる。脚は黄色，嘴は黒色で長い。シベリア東部からカムチャツカ半島あたりまでのロシア極東北部と，エニセイ川河口流域の一部に繁殖分布し，フィリピン，マレー諸島，スラウェシ島，ニューギニア島，オーストラリアなどで越冬する。日本には，春秋の渡りの時期に渡来し，各地の海岸，干潟，河原，水田などに見られる。「ぴゅいー，ぴゅいー」と口笛のような声で鳴く。なお，姿のよく似るメリケンキアシシギ T. incana は日本には旅鳥または冬鳥（→渡り鳥）としてまれに渡来する。見分け方は，メリケンキアシシギのほうが少し大きく，鳴き声が「ぴりぴりぴり」と連続することである。（→渉禽類）
