Although it is sometimes used in the same sense as carbocation, it is usually a narrower concept, referring to a tricoordinate carbocation (a) or a dicoordinate vinyl cation (b) (strictly speaking, the canonical structural formula with the largest contribution has a carbon atom with such a structure). An ion formed when an electron-deficient monovalent group coordinates to a central atom with an unshared electron pair is called an onium ion, and this name was given to it because it can be considered as an ion that forms a coordinate bond with the unshared electron pair of carbene. When expressed as an ethylcarbenium ion, it is unclear whether CH 3 CH 2 + or CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 + is meant, and so this term should be avoided as the stem of a systematic name.
