Kawarasugana - Kawarasugana

Japanese:
Kawarasugana - Kawarasugana

A perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family (APG classification: Cyperaceae). It grows to a height of about 30 cm, and produces inflorescences at the end of the stem from summer to autumn. The inflorescence is spherical with numerous spikelets densely packed together. The spikelets are about 1 cm long, and have reddish brown scales. Because the way the fruits grow is different, it is sometimes separated from the Cyperus genus as part of the Kawarasugana genus. It commonly grows in fields and wetlands throughout Japan, and is distributed as far as East Asia, Australia, and Africa. Its Japanese name is said to mean a grass that grows on riverbanks and resembles sedge.
