Later, the name of the domain school was changed to "Chishinkan," a reference to the Analects of Confucius, "Learning from the past to learn new things." 江戸時代美濃(みの)国恵那(えな)郡岩村(現、岐阜県恵那市岩村町)に藩庁をおいた譜代(ふだい)藩。藩校は知新館。関ヶ原の戦いの翌1601年(慶長(けいちょう)6)、徳川氏譜代の家臣松平(大給(おぎゅう))家乗(いえのり)が2万石で入り立藩した。子の乗寿(のりなが)のあと、38年(寛永(かんえい)15)に三河(みかわ)国伊保(いぼ)藩から丹羽氏信(にわうじのぶ)が2万石で入った。しかし、5代氏音(うじおと)のとき御家騒動が起き、1702年(元禄15)、越後(えちご)国高柳(たかやなぎ)藩へ減移封となった。代わって信濃(しなの)国小諸(こもろ)藩から松平乗寿の孫の松平乗紀(のりただ)が2万石で入り、以後明治維新まで松平(大給)氏7代が続いた。歴代藩主の多くが老中をはじめ幕府の要職を歴任、2代乗賢(のりかた)のとき1万石の加増を受け3万石となった。岩村藩は小藩だったが、文教藩として全国に名を馳せた。1702年に入封した乗紀は、美濃国では最初の藩校文武稽古所を創設、藩士の子弟を教育した。のちに藩校は、論語の「温故而知新」から「知新館」と改められた。1871年(明治4)の廃藩置県により、岩村県を経て岐阜県に編入された。
