A former town in Nakakanbara County, central Niigata Prefecture. The town's center, Muramatsu, is located in the Muramatsu Basin in the west. During the Edo Period, it was a castle town, and after the Meiji Period, it developed into a military town when an infantry regiment was stationed there. The knitwear industry is thriving, and Muramatsu tea is a specialty of the town. Incorporated into Gosen City in January 2006. 253.07 km2 . Population: 20,730 (2003).
