Athenagoras - Athenagoras (English spelling)

He was an apologist for the early Christian Church and was called the "Christian philosopher of Athens." His life story is unknown. Compared to Tatian, he had a much closer affinity to classical Greece, and surpassed Justin in his refined terminology and style. He offered philosophical reflections on issues such as the oneness of God, His existence and place, and the divinity of Logos = Christ, and was a pioneer in the formation of the doctrine of the Trinity. His writings include "Plea for Christians" ( Presbeia peri tōn christianōn) , addressed to Emperor Marcus Aurelius and his son Commodus, and "On the Resurrection of the Dead" (Peri anastaseōs necrōn) .

初代キリスト教会の護教家で、「アテネのキリスト教哲学者」と称された。生涯については不詳である。タティアノスに比してはるかに古典ギリシアに親近性を有し、また、洗練された用語、文体においてユスティノスをしのぐ。神の唯一性、その存在と場、ロゴス＝キリストの神性などの問題に関して哲学的反省を加え、三位(さんみ)一体論の教義形成の先駆者となった。著作に、皇帝マルクス・アウレリウスとその子コンモドゥスにあてた『キリスト者のための嘆願』Presbeia peri tōn christianōn、および『死者の復活について』Peri anastaseōs necrōnが残されている。
