Popular novel - tsuuzokushosetsu

It refers to books that are highly entertaining and widely accepted by the masses. It is associated with a concept that is opposed to so-called pure literature. Popular novels are based on popular topknot novels from before the end of the Edo period, while popular novels are characterized by being based on modern family life and always containing elements that pander to the reader. Historically, their origins can be found in the family novels of the Meiji period. Examples include Ozaki Koyo's "Konjiki Yasha" (1897-1902) and Tokutomi Roka's "Hototogisu" (1908-09), and from the mid-Taisho period, Kume Masao's "Hotarugusa" (1918) and Kikuchi Kan's "Shinjufujin" (1920) lead to the Showa period works of Kojima Masajiro, Yoshiya Nobuko, Ishizaka Yojiro, and others. After World War II, the popular concept became more diverse in terms of subject matter, including eroticism, stories about office workers, and mystery stories.

娯楽性が強く、大衆に広く迎え入れられている読み物をいう。いわゆる純文学に対立する概念が伴う。幕末以前に取材した俗受けする髷物(まげもの)小説が大衆小説とよばれるのに対して、通俗小説は現代の家庭生活に取材し、読者に媚(こ)びる要素をつねにもつところに特色がある。歴史的にみると明治の家庭小説にその源流が求められる。尾崎紅葉(こうよう)の『金色夜叉(こんじきやしゃ)』（1897～1902）、徳冨蘆花(とくとみろか)の『不如帰(ほととぎす)』（1908～09）などがそうであり、大正中期の久米(くめ)正雄の『蛍草(ほたるぐさ)』（1918）や菊池寛の『真珠夫人』（1920）などを経て、昭和期の小島政二郎(まさじろう)、吉屋信子(のぶこ)、石坂洋次郎らの作品につながる。第二次世界大戦後になると、通俗の概念は題材的にエロティシズムやサラリーマン物や推理物をも含め、多様化していくこととなる。
