A fern of the Malvaceae family (illustration), known as a sclerenchyma (fern) because of its thick, flat leaves. The rhizome is short and creeping, and has dense brown, membranous, ovate scales along with the base of the petiole. The leaves are simple and lanceolate. The petiole is short and the difference with the leaf surface is sometimes not clear, and the total length of the leaf is 10-30 cm. The petiole of the sporophyll is longer than or the same length as the leaf blade. The veins are free parallel veins and are not clearly visible when the plant is fresh. The sporangia cover the entire underside of the sporophyll, which turns black-brown when the spores ripen. There are no capsules or lateral filaments.
