A town located in central Egypt, about 500 km southeast of Cairo, at a large bend in the Nile. Capital of the governorate of the same name. Located at the starting point of the caravan route connecting the Nile Valley with the Red Sea, it has prospered since ancient times through trade with Arabia and India. Famous for producing clay water jars. Connected to Cairo by rail. Population 141,700 (1986 estimate).
