...There are two economic conditions that could be cited as the key to success. One of them was the fact that, surprisingly, a system of finance based on documentary bills of exchange already existed here, which allowed farmers to use the funds they needed very profitably by establishing a stamp exchange alongside the product exchange. Packed cotton was sent to the cotton handling office in Shikamazu, where farmers received a "document receipt" issued by the office. By attaching a "loan receipt" to this and submitting it to the stamp exchange, farmers could receive 70-80% of the price of the cotton in cotton stamps without interest.
