Akamagaseki

Japanese: 赤間関 - あかまがせき
Akamagaseki
The former name of Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is also called "Akamagane" or "Magasaki". Located on the north bank of the Shimonoseki Strait, it was a key transportation point between Kyushu and the continent. In the Heian period, a waterfront building was established here to entertain foreign ships, and in the Kamakura period, the Nagato Tandai was established here in preparation for the Mongol invasions. In the Edo period, Nishimawari ships (→Kitamaebune) called at the port, and it prospered as a transit point between the Kamigata and northern provinces. In 1889, the city was established. In 1902, it was renamed Shimonoseki City. Akamagane is the center of present-day Shimonoseki City. The festival of the former emperor at Akamagane Shrine, which enshrines Emperor Antoku, has been famous since ancient times. There are many historical sites, such as the old battlefield of Dannoura, Imimiya Shrine at the site of Toyoura Palace, the tomb of Emperor Antoku at Amidaji Temple, the graves of the Heike clan, the remains of the Dannoura battery, the remains of Nagato Senzenji, Sumiyoshi Shrine, and the grave of Takasugi Shinsaku.
