A one-man play. A play performed by only one actor. Monologue means a soliloquy. Sometimes other actors appear, but no lines are spoken. Between 1775 and 1780, the German actor Johann Christian Brandes (1735-99) practiced this style extensively to show off his acting skills, and it gained popularity. This is called a monodrama, but the term monologue play generally seems to refer to a more coherent one-act play or a play long enough to be a single performance.
