It can also be read as "ategai." Since the Heian period, this word has come to be used to refer to the grant, transfer, disposal, or entrustment of real or movable property. In particular, it was often used to mean the grant of land in manors or territories, and as the relationship between master and servant developed in samurai society, it came to be used to mean the pension given by a master to a servant (on/hoko). In samurai society, the pension was initially differentiated as "jugyo" for territories and "bunin" for positions, but eventually both came to be seen as "jugyo." 〈あてがい〉とも読む。平安時代以後,不動産や動産の給与,譲与,処分,委託行為をさして使われるようになった語。なかでも荘園や所領での土地の給与の意味でしばしば使われたことから,その後の武家社会における主従関係の発展とともに,主人から従者に与えられる恩給の意味で用いられるようになった(御恩・奉公)。その恩給は武家社会では,はじめのうち所領については充行,所職については補任(ぶにん)と区別されていたが,やがてともに充行としてとらえられるようになった。
