An international organization established by Japan, the United States, and Canada based on the North Pacific Fisheries Convention (which came into force in 1953). It was dissolved in 1993. Its headquarters are in Vancouver, Canada. The convention was amended in 1979 to set up a 200-mile fishing zone by the United States and Canada. It held annual conferences and aimed to conserve anadromous fish species, and in particular regulated Japan's salmon and trout fisheries. It was dissolved in 1993 when the Convention for the Conservation of Anadromous Fish Stocks in the North Pacific came into force. The North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission was established as its successor. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
