A sumo wrestler and professional wrestler from the Showa period. Former international heavyweight champion in professional wrestling. He is said to have been born in northern Korea before World War II, but was adopted by farmer Momota Minosuke from Omura City, Nagasaki Prefecture, and his real name was Momota Mitsuhiro. He entered the Nishonoseki stable of sumo wrestling in 1939 (Showa 14). He made his debut in the May tournament of 1940. He made his debut in the makuuchi division in 1946. He was promoted to sekiwake in 1949, but retired the following year in 1950. His record in sumo was 124 wins and 70 losses. In 1951, he began professional wrestling with the help of former world champion Bobby Bruns, and built a reputation as a professional wrestler in America. He founded the Japan Professional Wrestling Association in 1953. In February 1954, he invited the Sharpe Brothers, the world tag champions, to a wrestling event, where he beat the giants with karate chops, blowing away the postwar Japanese complex about America and creating a huge boom. The wrestling boom also contributed to the spread of television, coloring postwar history. In December 1954, he defeated Kimura Masahiko, a former Japanese judo champion, to become the first Japanese wrestling champion. In 1958, he defeated Lou Thesz to win the International Heavyweight title, and in 1962, he defeated Fred Blassie to win the World Heavyweight title, among other titles. He also trained many successors, including Giant Baba and Antonio Inoki. He established wrestling events in Japan, but was stabbed by a gangster on December 9, 1963, and died of his wounds on the 15th.
