Quimper - Quimper (English spelling)

The capital of Finistère department in western France. Population 63,238 (1999). A city along the Odet River in the southwest of Brittany. Formerly the capital of the County of Cornouaille (Quimper-Corentin). It is also the seat of a bishopric. Although it is far from big cities, it has a thriving food and textile industry, and is famous for its traditional pottery industry known as Quimper ware. It is also the tourist center of southern Brittany. It is home to the Gothic Saint-Corentin Cathedral (built between the 13th and 15th centuries).

フランス西部、フィニステール県の県都。人口6万3238（1999）。ブルターニュ半島南西部のオデ川に沿う都市。かつてはコルヌアーユ伯爵領の首都（カンペール・コランタン）であった。司教座の所在地。大都市から離れているが、食品、繊維工業が盛んであり、カンペール焼とよばれる伝統的な陶器業が有名である。ブルターニュ南部の観光の中心地でもある。ゴシック建築のサン・コランタン大聖堂（13～15世紀建造）がある。
