The capital of Finistère department in western France. Population 63,238 (1999). A city along the Odet River in the southwest of Brittany. Formerly the capital of the County of Cornouaille (Quimper-Corentin). It is also the seat of a bishopric. Although it is far from big cities, it has a thriving food and textile industry, and is famous for its traditional pottery industry known as Quimper ware. It is also the tourist center of southern Brittany. It is home to the Gothic Saint-Corentin Cathedral (built between the 13th and 15th centuries).
