Also called leucomycin. A 16-membered macrolide antibiotic produced by Streptomyces kitasatoensis . A mixture of compounds with different acyl side chains, A 1 , A 3 -A 9 , U and V, is obtained. The main component is A 3 . All components are fat-soluble and basic, and are white or pale yellow powders. Odorless, bitter in taste. Easily soluble in ethanol, acetone, ether and chloroform, soluble in carbon tetrachloride, slightly soluble in water, insoluble in petroleum ether. Effective against gram-positive bacteria, rickettsia, chlamydia and mycoplasma. Inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome and blocking the transpeptidation reaction. Used as an injection, oral or topical medication.
