North Karuizawa

Japanese: 北軽井沢 - きたかるいざわ

A plateau area at an altitude of about 1,200m that spreads across the southern part of Naganohara Town in western Gunma Prefecture. It was once a desolate area of lava and volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Asama, interspersed with small birch forests, but it quickly gained popularity as a summer resort, and university villages and other facilities were established. Roads and waterworks were developed, and it has become a large residential area. The center is around Makinomiya Shrine along National Route 146, and tourist spots such as Lake Teruzuki, Asama Ranch, and Onioshidashi Rock are also nearby.

群馬県西部，長野原町の南部に広がる標高 1200m付近の高原地区。かつては浅間山の噴火による一面の溶岩や火山灰の原をなし，小さなシラカバ林を交えた荒涼としたところであったが，早くから避暑地として注目され，大学村などができ，道路や水道が整備されて一大分譲別荘地となった。中心は国道 146号線沿いの牧ノ宮神社付近で，照月湖，浅間牧場，鬼押出岩などの観光地も近い。
