Evening dress

Japanese: イブニングドレス（英語表記）evening dress

A general term for formal attire worn by men and women at formal dinners, theater, concerts, and other evening gatherings. Also called evening wear, it refers in the narrow sense to women's attire. For men, the formal attire is a tailcoat with a bowler or top hat, but in recent years, the attire has become more casual, and tuxedos are often worn as semi-formal attire for the evening. For women, on the other hand, designs vary according to fashion, but they are generally long, made of lace, satin, or velvet, and have a large cut at the back or chest to expose the bare skin.

夕方からの正式な晩餐や観劇，音楽会など，夜の会合に着る男女の正装の総称。夜会服ともいい，狭義には婦人のそれをいう。男性の場合は，燕尾服に山高帽かシルクハットをかぶるのが正式であるが，近来は略装化されて，夜の半正装としてのタキシードが着られることも多くなった。これに対して女性の場合は，流行に応じてデザインもさまざまであるが，概して丈が長く，レースやサテン，ベルベットなどを素材とする，背か胸元を大きくえぐって素肌を出したデコルテ型が一般的特徴になっている。
