Japanese: クンダン（英語表記）kéndang

A membraphone that takes the lead in Indonesian gamelan ensemble music. In the narrow sense, it refers to a double-sided drum struck with a stick, but in the broad sense, it refers to a set of two to four drums struck by hand. The act of playing the drums is called kendanggan. In ensembles, more improvisation is allowed than with other instruments, and the complexity of the rhythm enhances the music, and the rhythmic patterns and emphasis of the music lead to changes in tempo. In Java, there are three types of drums, kendanggunding, ketipung, and batanggan, from the largest to the smallest, while in Bali there is the small high-pitched kendanglanang and the large low-pitched kendangwadong, which are said to represent both men and women.

インドネシアのガムラン合奏音楽で全体の主導権を握る膜鳴楽器。狭義では桴 (ばち) を使って打つ両面太鼓をさすが，広義には2～4個セットで手で打つものをさす。またドラムを演奏することをクンダンガンという。合奏のなかではほかの楽器よりも即興が多く許され，リズムの複雑さで音楽を高揚させ，約束によるリズム型と音強法によってテンポの変化を先導する機能を果す。ジャワ島にはサイズを区別して大きいものからクンダングンディン，クティプン，バタンガンがあり，バリ島には小型高音のクンダンラナンと大型低音のクンダンワドンがあって，男女両性を表わすとされる。
