A town in Kunohe County in northern Iwate Prefecture, bordering Aomori Prefecture. Karumai, the town in the center, was a former post town on the Kunohe Highway, and during the feudal era, it was known for producing iron sand nearby and Nambu iron bottles. It produces rice, tobacco leaves, and hops, and also raises livestock and silkworms. The Hachinohe Expressway runs through the town. 245.82 km2 . Population: 10,209 (2010).
