A type of relay communication mainly between countries, in which broadcast video, audio and communication data are sent and received mutually using communication satellites and earth station facilities. It uses communication satellites in geostationary orbit 36,000 km above the equator. Communications satellites used include Intelsat, which was taken over from an international organization, and Intersputnik, an international organization centered on Russia and involving former Eastern European countries. In Japan, it is often used for international communications, but it is also used within the country by broadcasters and others for live coverage. Another relay method is cable relay, which uses optical fiber cables laid under the sea.
