A programming language designed by the US Department of Defense for writing programs for military embedded computer systems. It was developed in the early 1980s. It is suited to real-time processing (→ real-time processing) and system programs, and is used in fields that require reliability, such as aircraft. The grammar is influenced by Pascal, but it is characterized by its package function for efficient development by dividing a program among multiple people, task function for parallel processing, and exception handling function. The language is named after Augusta Ada King, daughter of British poet George Gordon Byron, who served as an assistant to mathematician and inventor Charles Babbage and is considered to be the world's first woman programmer.
