Liberal Unionist Party (English spelling)

A British political party. It was founded in 1886 by Joseph Chamberlain, the Marquess of Hartington and others who left the Liberal Party in opposition to Home Rule when the Liberal Party split over the Irish Home Rule Bill submitted by the Gladstone Liberal Cabinet. It was named after its advocacy of maintaining "unity" with Ireland. After joining the Salisbury Conservative Cabinet in 1895, it deepened its fusion with the Conservative Party, even though it had its own organization and funding, and was finally absorbed into the Conservative Party in 1912. During this process, its number of members of the House of Commons, which was 79 in 1886, gradually decreased, and in the December 1910 election, it only managed to win 35 seats.

イギリスの政党。1886年、グラッドストーン自由党内閣が提出したアイルランド自治法案をめぐって自由党が分裂した際、自治に反対して党を去った、ジョゼフ・チェンバレンやハーティントン侯などによってつくられた。アイルランドとの「統一」維持を鼓吹するところからこの名がある。95年にソールズベリー保守党内閣に参加したのちは、独自の組織と資金をもちながらも、保守党との融合を深め、1912年に最終的に保守党に吸収された。1886年に79名いた下院議員もこの過程で漸減し、1910年12月選挙では35名を当選させるにとどまった。
