Born: March 16, 1665 in Bologna
[Died] July 16, 1747. Bologna. Italian late Baroque genre painter. Commonly known as Lo Spagnolo. He mainly worked in Bologna. He was a pupil of D. Canuti, but was more influenced by the Carracci and Correggio, and his genre paintings with striking chiaroscuro effects influenced G. Piazzetta and P. Longhi. His representative works include the series "The Seven Sacraments" (c. 1712-15, Dresden State Picture Gallery) and "The Chisel" (Uffizi Gallery).

Crespi, Giovanni Battista

[Died] October 23, 1632? Milan Italian painter and sculptor. Commonly known as Il Cerano. After traveling to Venice and Rome, he settled in Milan. In 1620, he became the director of the painting department at the Accademia Ambrosiana, and contributed to the development of realism in the Milan school before M. Caravaggio. His representative work is "The Life of St. Carlo Borromeo" (1602-10, Milan Cathedral).

[Died] 1630. Milanese Italian painter. A pupil of GB Crespi and G. Procaccini (→ Procaccini family). He produced works mainly in Milan, but also in Novara, Piacenza and Pavia. He painted devout religious half-length portraits. His representative work is "The Septuagint Meal of St. Carlo Borromeo" (c. 1628, Milan, Santa Maria Passione).
