Mullite

A general term for aluminosilicates with the composition 3Al ₂ O ₃ ･2SiO ₂ - 2Al ₂ O ₃ ･SiO _2. Needle-shaped crystals. Rarely found in nature. It is found in thermally metamorphic rocks on the Isle of Mull in Scotland, from which it takes its name. _{3Al 2} O ₃ ･2SiO ₂ : Orthorhombic crystal system, lattice constants a = 0.749, b = 0.785, c = 0.574 nm. Density 3.15 g cm ^-3 . Refractive index α = 1.642, β = 1.644, γ = 1.654. ​​Optic axis angle 2 V = 45-50°. Positive optical properties. Melting point 1850 °C. Mullite is a high-temperature stable phase of the Al ₂ O ₃ -SiO ₂ system that is also produced by heating clay (kaolin) and is found in ceramics and silica-alumina refractories. It has high refractoriness, great mechanical strength, and excellent load-softening properties, and is used as mullite porcelain and silica-alumina refractories for scientific and chemical applications and for spark plug insulators. It is manufactured by firing clay and alumina in a rotary kiln.

3Al₂O₃･2SiO₂～2Al₂O₃･SiO₂の組成をもつアルミノケイ酸塩の総称．針状の結晶．天然にはまれに産出する．スコットランドのムル島の熱変成岩中に産出し，名称もこれに由来している．3Al₂O₃･2SiO₂：斜方晶系，格子定数a ＝ 0.749，b ＝ 0.785，c ＝ 0.574 nm．密度3.15 g cm^－3．屈折率α ＝ 1.642，β ＝ 1.644，γ ＝ 1.654．光軸角2V ＝ 45～50°．光学性は正．融点1850 ℃．ムライトはAl₂O₃-SiO₂系の高温安定形相で，粘土(カオリン)の加熱によっても生成し，陶磁器，シリカ-アルミナ系耐火物などに含まれる．耐火度が高く機械的強度が大きく，荷重軟化性もすぐれており，理化学用あるいは点火栓がいしなどムライト磁器，シリカ-アルミナ系耐火物として用いられる．粘土とアルミナを原料とし，ロータリーキルンによって焼成し，製造されている．
