[Diversification Strategy in the United States]
It was after the 1960s that business strategy and strategic decision-making began to be emphasized in theory and practice within business management, and became especially popular in the 1970s. This was largely due to the fact that, at the practical level, growth through diversification (business diversification), which began in the 1920s and became common as a means of growth for big American businesses in the 1960s against the backdrop of technological innovation in the 1950s, had a strong strategic meaning, and at the research level, A.D. Chandler and H.I. Ansoff evaluated diversification for its strategic implications. It is not clear when diversification was consciously recognized as a basic strategy for corporate growth in large American companies.
