Takanao Kikuchi

Japanese:
Takanao Kikuchi
Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A military commander in Higo during the final period of the Heian period. According to the family tree, he was the sixth head of the Kikuchi clan, and in the latter half of the 12th century, he exerted his military might over the entire Higo province, and was called Kikuchi Gonnokami. In the autumn of 1180 (Jisho 4), in opposition to the control of Kyushu by the Taira clan, he united the forces of Higo, including Aso Koreyasu and Kihara Morizane, and raised an army. At one point, he attacked Dazaifu, but in the spring of 1182 (Yowa 2), he surrendered to Taira Sadayoshi, the envoy in pursuit of them. After that, he went to Kyoto as a military commander on the Taira side, and in August of the same year, he accompanied Emperor Antoku, who went down to Dazaifu. His whereabouts after that are unclear, and it is said that he returned to Higo when Ogata Koreyoshi and others attacked Dazaifu in October of the same year, or that he shared the fate of the Taira clan, was captured, and was beheaded at Gojogawara in Kyoto. <References>Kudo Keiichi, "The Establishment of the Shoen Kokuryo System and the Civil War"
