Hoashi Kyouu

Japanese: 帆足杏雨 - ほあしきょうう

1810-1884 A painter from the late Edo to Meiji periods.
Born on April 15, 1812. His family was the headman of Hetsugi, Bungo (Oita Prefecture). He studied under Tanomura Takeda and Uragami Shunkin, and also studied literati painting from the Yuan and Ming dynasties (China). He was acquainted with Hoashi Banri, Hirose Tanso, and Rai Sanyo. He passed away on June 9, 1884. He was 75 years old. His childhood names were Kumataro and Yohei. His given name was En. His pen name was Chidai. His other pen names were Choshu and he was a half-farmer. His works include "Wind and Rain Landscape Painting."

文化7年4月15日生まれ。家は豊後(ぶんご)(大分県)戸次(へつぎ)の大庄屋。田能村(たのむら)竹田,浦上春琴に師事し,元(げん)・明(みん)(中国)の文人画にもまなぶ。帆足万里(ばんり),広瀬淡窓,頼山陽らとまじわる。明治17年6月9日死去。75歳。幼名は熊太郎,庸平。名は遠。字(あざな)は致大。別号に聴秋,半農。作品に「風雨山水図」など。
