Born on April 15, 1812. His family was the headman of Hetsugi, Bungo (Oita Prefecture). He studied under Tanomura Takeda and Uragami Shunkin, and also studied literati painting from the Yuan and Ming dynasties (China). He was acquainted with Hoashi Banri, Hirose Tanso, and Rai Sanyo. He passed away on June 9, 1884. He was 75 years old. His childhood names were Kumataro and Yohei. His given name was En. His pen name was Chidai.
