Kigusuri

…The term “herbal medicine” first appeared in 1880 when Gendō Ooi translated the German word Pharmakognosie as “pharmacognosy.” The word “kigusuri” existed in ancient times, and the word “honshogaku” was used to refer to the study of Japanese and Chinese medicines, but this word was newly created to mean that it was treated as a field of modern science. The word “pharmacognosy” was first used in the title of a paper by Seydler in 1815, and in 1832, the name was used in TWC Martius’s “Grundriss der Pharmakognosie des Pflanzenreiches” (The Foundations of Pharmacognosy), and has remained in use to this day. …

…生薬という言葉は1880年大井玄洞がドイツ語のPharmakognosieに対して〈生薬学〉の訳語をあてたことに始まる。古来〈きぐすり〉という言葉があり，和漢薬の研究に対しては〈本草学〉という語があったが，近代科学の1分野として取り扱うという意味から新しく造られた言葉である。Pharmakognosieという語は1815年ザイドラーSeydlerが論文の標題に用いたのが最初で，1832年マルティウスT.W.C.Martiusの《生薬学の基礎Grundriss der Pharmakognosie des Pflanzenreiches》にこの名称が用いられ，今日に至っている。…
