Kikuazami - Kikuazami

Japanese: キクアザミ - きくあざみ
Kikuazami - Kikuazami

A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family (APG classification: Asteraceae). The stem is 0.3-1.2 meters tall. The basal and lower leaves have long stalks. The leaf blade is ovate, pinnately lobed or mid-lobed, and resembles that of a chrysanthemum. The higher up the stem leaves are, the shorter the petiole is, and those at the top are sessile. The leaf blade does not run down the stem, and the stem has no wings. It produces panicle-shaped flower heads from September to October. Although it is called "thistle," it is not a member of the Cirsium genus but a member of the Saussurea genus. It grows in sunny mountain grasslands in Honshu west of Fukushima Prefecture and Kyushu, and is also distributed in the Korean Peninsula, northeastern China, and the Ussuri River basin.
