…In 1903, Nicolas Arthus (1862-1945) discovered that repeated injections of horse serum into the skin of rabbits caused redness at the injection site, and eventually ulcers formed. This is now called the Arthus reaction (or Arthus phenomenon), and indicates that repeated injections actually intensify the reaction. These phenomena indicate that the body becomes hypersensitive to a certain substance when it comes into contact with it, and that when it comes into contact with the same substance again after a certain period of time, it shows a different reaction than it did the first time. …
