Sadaedang (English spelling)

Sadaedang (English spelling)
A political party in Korea at the end of the Joseon Dynasty (Yi Dynasty), also known as the Qing Dynasty. Its name comes from the fact that the party paid tribute to the Qing Dynasty after the reign of the 16th king, King Injo (reigned 1623-49). It was a conservative party centered around Queen Min and her faction, and most of the important officials joined this party. Based on large landowners, bureaucrats, and local Confucian scholars with Confucian ideology, it opposed Japan with the support of the Qing Dynasty and tried to maintain its power. After the Imo Incident (→ Gyeongseong Incident), the Qing Dynasty advanced and Japan retreated, but in the process, the Independence Party (enlightened and pro-Japanese) was formed. After that, there were successive power changes between the Sadae Party and the Independence Party amidst various incidents such as the Gapsin Coup (1884) and the Gabo Reforms (94), but the influence of the Sadae Party declined following the assassination of Queen Min (→ Eulmo Coup) (95).
