…In these advanced countries, national unification was being carried out, and literature, the main area of culture, was created and accepted under a common understanding, whereas in Germany, which was made up of about 300 statehoods, and partly due to the influence of the Thirty Years' War, there were large regional differences and literary production was extremely diverse. In the Catholic south, Latin literature continued to dominate as in the Humanist period, and there were playwright Jakob Biedermann (1578-1639) and poet Jakob Balde (1604-68) and there was a strong tendency toward the Counter-Reformation. The imperial city of Nuremberg was home to Georg Philipp Harsdörffer (1607-58) and other poets of the highbrow "Société d'études herders et d'flowers" (1644), while eastern Silesia produced many Lutheran poets and playwrights, including Opitz, Friedrich von Logau (1604-55), Gerhart, and Grueffius, and thus, despite being on the outskirts, it had the feel of a literary center of the era. *Some of the terminology that mentions "Balde, T." is listed below.
