Cantor, Georg Ferdinand Ludwig Philipp
Born: March 3, 1845, Petersburg
[Died] January 6, 1918, Halle. German mathematician. Known as the founder of infinite set theory, and a contributor to analysis, topology, and mathematical logic. Educated in Zurich, Berlin, and Göttingen (1863-66). Obtained his doctorate in number theory in 1867. Served as a private lecturer (69), associate professor (72), and full professor (79) at the University of Halle. In addition to Fourier series theory and irrational number theory, his research on infinity, especially the construction of set theory, is considered one of the greatest achievements of 19th century mathematics. His theory of considering infinite sets as a single object was opposed by L. Kronecker. He suffered from mental illness from middle age and died in a psychiatric hospital in Halle. His theory was finally recognized in the 20th century, and had a great influence on the development of mathematics thereafter. One of his famous books is "Contributions to the Foundations of Transfinite Set Theory" (95-97).
