Box shrimp (Linuparus trigonus)

Box shrimp (Linuparus trigonus)
A decapod crustacean of the family Spinyridae (illustration). It is an edible shrimp that is distributed from the Boso Peninsula to the South China Sea, and has also been recorded from Hawaii. It is a large species that can reach a body length of 35 cm, but it is not very important in the fishing industry because its meat is hard and there are not many individuals. It is caught on the muddy bottom at depths of 30 to 100 meters in the East China Sea and Yellow Sea, so it is often called mud shrimp in landing ports such as Nagasaki and Shimonoseki. It seems to feed on bivalves and lugworms. Its carapace is extremely hard. It was named this because the shape of its carapace looks like a box.
